just noticed the manual says take it easy for first 300 miles but also says 600 mile first service?? I might just change oil and filter now at 300 and ride normally, then first service at 600 - any thoughts dudes?

geezzzz.... relax. Are you asking for opinion or stating yours and then attacking anyone with a differing one? I personally rode easy for the first 428 miles... where I am sitting now. And I will continue to ride pretty smoothly and easily at minimum to 600 miles for my first service. I am taking Honda's guidelines a little further which is probably overkill, but hey.. that is just me. Also, I am pretty sure the "ride easy for 300" has to do with more than just oil and air filter... my .02

haha I wasn't given an opinion and im very relaxed, thanks for the advice. I just think it might be a good idea to change oil and oil filter now before first service to get ride of the cack and then do again at first service, that is all.........irn bru gets you through psssssssht, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I personally like to get the factory/dealer? oil and metal bits out of the engine as early as possible and put a known quantity/quality of oil and new filter in the engine ASAP! I generally have 3 changes in the first 1,000 miles (1,600 km).

I'll check and watch the oil and decide what to do after I get the bike.

Do ya add anything to irn bru to lubricate it or make it stronger?

The manual says ride conservatively for the first 300 miles regarding running in. The service schedule says 600 miles for the first service.

Personally I'd do just that.

Though I wouldn't ride it to the max for the 300 to 600 mile part. That oil will be full of all the running in particles and may be of a lesser spec (for running in purposes) so I'd wait till after the 600 mile service to rag it!

Lets face it, that Honda engine will still be going strong in 10 years/50k miles time no matter what you do so I wouldn't worry too much!

Whatever you do don't put Irn Bru in it!!

International Note:

Irn Bru is a golden coloured (looks a bit like piss - or should that be pesh) soft drink/soda favoured by the Scots.

It is in fact the forerunner of all the fancy energy drinks like Red Bull etc but is of course far superior.

that makes more sense to me than waiting 600 miles for first change, (not saying I know better than Honda) but it cant do any harm.

I used to add the old uisge beatha but it never did me any good - hulk juice!

Yeah, make sense I suppose. I'm going to treat the first service as an oil flush, a few miles later I'll change it for the semi synthetic I normally use - can't remember what it is though!! Maybe Castrol, I've still got a couple of litres of it somewhere in the garage.

Must get a filter on order.

Hey guys,

So I'm at around 200 miles and just wondering when you say don't ride it hard, what exactly do you mean. What's constitute riding it hard, is it a speed thing or an rpm thing?

I'd be more worried having the power bands tightened up at 300 miles...

I do a medium break in. Just do some serious roll-ons but not abuse it epically in the first 50 miles to seat the rings. I don’t exceed 5-6000 rpm for the first 300 miles. I change the oil/filter at 50 miles to get the metal out and again at around 300 then go to a synthetic at 600 and yes, after refurbing an old V65 Magna with several Honda design flaws I think a lot of folks know better than Honda. Not saying if you don’t change oil at 50 miles there’s anything wrong with it but I sleep better being overly cautious. You bike will never see those low miles again so I try to break her in right, “right” being my opinion of how it should be done and not necessarily the only way. Changing oil sooner than later never hurt anything. Except for the synthetic oil; been doing it this way for 50yrs and never had an issue. My X is getting well over 70 MPG right now around town and a little hwy.
