Cam chain noise fix (tensioner adjust) for Honda CBR500R, CB500F, CB500X

If you're hearing a noisy cam chain on your CB500R/F/X, this will fix it. To hear the noise, kneel beside the right side of the bike while it's idling and rev it to 3,500 rpm. The rattle is quite noticeable, and will increase momentarily as you release the throttle. This is a loose cam chain.

I found the fix on Youtube; search for "Honda cct cbr cam chain tensioner". The fix is for other CBR models, but works for all the 500 twins as well. Honda cam chain tensioners are supposed to be self-adjusting, but in fact are often not; but this fix is easy.

Use an 8mm wrench to remove the bolt at the end of the cam chain tensioner, which sticks out behind the right cylinder.

Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the bolt hole. I used a small removable flat-head bit from a screwdriver; the youtube videos mention a small screwdriver available at home depot, SKU 1000 039 354.

engage the tensioner shaft inside the hole and turn the bit clockwise 1/4 to 1/2 turn against spring tension, then release the bit quickly (or pull the bit out of the hole), allowing the spring-loaded shaft to reset.

Replace the bolt. You're done.

It is a common trick that is used on the CRF dirt bikes, they probably all use the same cam chain tensioner and they do stick occasionally.. By turning the screw in a clockwise direction you are retracting the plunger and then by pulling the screwdriver out you are just letting the plunger shoot back in and shock the system. Just do NOT do this with the engine running as the cam chain could jump a tooth or two if it is not tensioned..

I think I'll leave it alone. If it's automatic it will work at some point, maybe when I hit the red line or something.

So sometimes a little stress and high revs clears stuff up, hopefully.

I had a CRF450, never had trouble with that automatic thing, Heck I stayed up in the red line all the time, that kept everything in check. Only trouble the **** valves went south on me. Too many red line visits what they said.

I know this is an old post but I thought I would share my findings. Out of pure boredom, I decided to perform this on my bike with less than 1k miles on it. Removed the side panel, removed the 8mm screw, inserted a small flat screwdriver, turned 1/4 turn, let it snap out and low and behold the clattering noise in the engine was gone.

With such low miles on the bike this is a little concerning. I will now add this to my maintenance schedule.

Thanks Bikerdudeguy, just performed the procedure on my 2015 Honda CB500X and the cam chain slapping noise is gone, now it purrs like a Honda should. Put together a tool using a small diameter screw driver bit, a socket to hold the bit (with some masking tape to hold the bit) and socket swivel extension as a lever...and walla worked very nicely. This tool now is set aside for future adjustments.
