What is this thing screwed to my airbox?

284 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Simon Bee
I'm looking at doing an airbox mod, namely removing the snorkel from my 2014 CBR500R.

I've pulled my seat off and looked at the airbox, and there is this small box screwed to the airbox. circled in yellow in the pic below.

can anyone help me to know what it is? fuse? relay? I've cruised through the parts diagrams but I can't seem to find it.

any insight is appreciated

I believe it's just a wire junction. It's completely unrelated to the airbox in any case. I have an airbox mod on mine too and necessitated relocating it, I just tucked it in alongside the box the the left there

legend!

appreciate the reply! I will do the same and tuck it away

edit* All right after seeing your reply I got to second guessing myself. I've read so many of your posts. I deeply appreciate you contributing tothezenith.

The only other modification is a Yoshimura r77 slip on. I figured that today I would only be removing the snorkel just because I didn't want to go too far too fast.

if you ever come back to this thread, let me know your thoughts and an otherwise stock engine and doing the air box mod with an enlarged intake and replacing the stock air filter with a foam filter. I don't want to run lean!

thanks again.

No issues what so ever with airfilter mods, the ECU can account for deviations in airflow levels, akin to the differences between riding at sea level versus higher elevations. And on top of that the stock mapping is on the rich side anyway, so you've got some leeway. improved intake and slip-on is within the tolerances allowed by the ecu.

If you want to delve into intake improvements, my airbox mod here I did a few years ago can give you some direction. Since then I upgraded to an MWR foam filter (highly recommended) but the method to cut the lid was still needed for that. And even if only minimal power gain, it does give it a deeper growl for audio delight :)

EPIC

thank you!

I ended up ordering another airbox lid and carved out a much larger hole lolol 😂

I can't find the thread now but I sealed an air filter from a Honda lawnmower to the carved out lid, and I'm in love with the change.

the roar at WOT is legit and I feel like the engine braking has been reduced - when I get off the throttle it winds down much slower and smoother. now I've been bouncing off the rev limiter more too, the howl is addicting.

thanks for the reassurance!
