Cbr500 starting issues

I just bought a 2013 Cbr500 off Facebook marketplace, after I got home it started instantly but after about 5 minurs of it sitting it wouldn’t start again, just kept cranking. This morning when I tried to start it, it started to crank than just stoped. Is this a problem with the battery? What could be wrong?

The immediate symptoms point to a weak battery, which can be tested with a voltmeter (should read 12.6v or higher) and a battery load test should be done, also. An auto parts store can provide this testing, usually at no charge. Takes but a moment and you should have your answer. If these tests indicate all is well with the battery (very unlikely) then this forum can offer the next steps to solve the problem If you have the traditional flooded cell battery, make sure the battery acid is up to the level mark shown on the battery. Might need some distilled water added. Don't over-fill, as battery acid damages painted or plated surfaces. There should be an overflow tube from the battery, exiting below the frame.

BTW, make sure the battery terminals are clean and the connections are snug.

Let us know how this turns out..

Hey thanks man! I ended up plugging it into a battery charger for the night and it started right up in the morning and the morning after that without being on a charger. So for now I think I’m all good :) I literally just bought the bike off market place so I still need to even change the oil before I can ride.🤙🏻
Don't be surprised when it doesn't start again.
If you don't know battery age you should load test.
You are telling us classic old battery symptoms.
And I would bet one morning it wont start!

Thanks man, I’ll definitely go do a load test. The guy I bought the bike from told me he got the battery 9 months ago, but it’s Facebook marketplace so he could definitely be lying.
The OEM battery is surprisingly reliable. I bought my 2013 CBR500R 3-4 years ago as new old stock. The dealership kept the battery charged and the bike stayed in their showroom until I bought it. 9800ish miles later and the original battery is still working great.
