Are You Sure the Rear Turn Signals are NOT Running Lights?

214 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  RedRocket500R
The reason I ask is because my 2013 CBR500RA has the left rear turn signal on all the time, and flashes when you hit the blinker. The right rear turn signal is normally off and flashes properly when you hit that blinker. I've already replaced the right rear bulb, thinking that it was defective but no change. Then I read here in an old thread that the rear turn signals are NOT running lights, so what would make the left side stay on as running lights? I will add that I have replaced the front turn signals 3 times before with no issue, are they even connected to the back set? Any help would be appreciated, this is driving me nuts, THANKS!

I am not familiar with USA lighting laws. But if your left rear is on as a daylight running light and it also flashes brighter surely that must be correct. So if you check the bulb it should be a twin filament bulb and have three wires to the lamp. If that's is the case then the right rear should have the same bulb and you have a possible wiring fault. Unless it has a control unit that uses one filament for both jobs. In either case whatever set up the left side year uses so the right side should be the same. If that makes sense.
Rear turn signals are not running lights and should only flash.

Rear bulbs are single filament, the front are two filament.
Front are always on, the rear only flash to signal a turn.
Swap the right and left rear bulbs to confirm that the two rear bulbs are the same.
There could be a wrong bulb installed in the right that causes the problem.

Equally if you have the wrong bulb in the front left indicator (single filament rather than the correct dual filament) it can cause the rear left indicator to stay on all the time.. check the front bulb is the correct bulb..
a single filament bulb has the connection in the middle of the base and shorts the 2 offset pins in the holder together when placed in a twin filament socket, causing the rear indicator and indicator panel light to stay on all the time..

Thank you , Thrasherg! The front turn signal bulb Has 2 contacts on the bottom but was shorting the 2 mating contacts together, keeping the rear turn signal lit. Spot on dude.
