I think i'm going to have to sell the bike. Does anyone else find the 'X' intolerably noisy behind its screen? I have a very quiet helmet (Shoei GT Air), but at any speed above about 70km/h i just can't bear the noise.

All though its good fun standing on the pegs going down the freeway, its not really a practical solution. But it is quiet, so the issue is the bike its self.

Im not sure a taller screen would help. I think as i'm fairly short (5'9) and i sit quite far forward on the bike that the problem is that my head is in the low pressure buffet behind the screen. i've considered actually chopping down the stock small screen.

Has anybody else had similar issue and either fixed it with a taller screen (or shorter) screen??
cheers, Jim.

Funny you mention it, i took my screen off just a couple days ago to see how it goes without, so peaceful!! More buffeting of course but like a different bike noise wise over 70kmh, all the wind turbulence roar gone, just glorious Shoei quiet.
Will chuck the taller screen on and try that, cant remember what the noise levels was like when it was last on. Def made a difference to the wind cause i swapped back to the standard screen for the hot weather as i wasn't getting any air into the helmet vents with the taller screen

Since all of my suggestions have been taken i.e. change position, remove screen, taller screen execpt:

I've been a tad concerned about this, myself, as various folks report different results.

I figured if the windscreen deflected the air at my head, I could remove the windscreen and brackets. I've always ridden naked bikes so that seemed like the most simple (and cheapest) solution.

I am glad you posted this, although I am disappointed with one of the responses. I think telling someone who asked a reasonable question to buy a car and “gtfo” is vulgar and uncalled for. The whole purpose of these forums is to share information intelligently.

I have read through the all the previous postings about the Honda taller windscreen for the CB500XA, and there seems to be mixed feelings about it. Some have mentioned that it helped by pushing the air over their helmet, while other taller riders mentioned it moved the air from their chest under their helmet.

This second page from a previous thread has some good information.

Utilimutor posted the following which interested me as I am a tall rider as well.
“I'm a pretty big guy (190.5cm and 145kg or 6'3'' and 320lbs) and this new screen while bigger, still isn't quite doing the trick. I had seen a few pics of the new GIVI screen and have been chomping at the bit to get my hands on one. Well I pulled the trigger today and ordered one. It is a few inches taller than the Honda tall screen and quite a bit wider at the top.”

Unfortunately there was no follow-up post or thread to say whether or not it solved the problem.

In another thread there was another American made windscreen mentioned, but unfortunately I could not find the link again to reference it here. On the manufacturer’s website was a lot of information about the materials used in making windscreens and the science involved. It explained the difference between airflow over the screen and buffeting caused by turbulence around it.

I would like to see more responses from X riders who have tried a taller windscreen of any make. The things that would be of interest are: airflow around the rider and helmet, buffeting, noise, crosswinds, etc. It would be helpful to mention how tall you are.

I intend to do a lot of back road riding for pleasure, but have to ride busy highways at 110 kph for an hour each way to get there and back home. So an effective windscreen certainly would make the first and last hours of my rides more enjoyable and less fatiguing.

Anybody think the mirrors might be part of the problem? How
about someone give it a try before I have to. I put powerbronze
screen on mine which is about 3" taller and is a little better
but not ideal. I don't have a very quiet helmet and do wear
earplugs.

Saying the wind noise is too loud and will sell the bike as a result, from a dipshit who spent all of ten minutes on said bike, is vulgar and uncalled for.

Lol, thanks as always for your invaluable input to the thread. It's people like you that make the internet s#it. Having such a toxic personality must be difficult. You need to find a hobby. Perhaps leather work, you can make some really cool stuff.

In my 4 month's of ownership I've put about 4000kms on the bike, use it daily, and in my 25 or so years of riding I've never been so uncomfortable at speed. Thankfully most of my use for the bike is fairly low speed commuting but not being able to take the bike on longer rides for fear of further damaging my hearing is making me think about offloading the bike. I don't need a quieter car, the one we have is fine.

I don't really want to spend 250+ bucks on the bike if I'm going to sell it shortly, i'll try the other suggestions like spacing out the top/bottom of the screen in its various positions, etc.

To the poster that was going to see if the taller screen made it much better please keep us posted.
Jim.

Thanks! That was the link I was referring to. It's a long read, but a lot of good information there.

One of the previous posters mentioned about buying a California Scientific windscreen for his X, but again there was no follow-up posting.

I bought one and thought I did a follow up. Well it works great , it is 11" taller than the stock Honda shield. I am 6' tall and it pushes the wind over my helmet, and I am not getting any buffeting, and I have it set in the lower position, and I can see over it. I know smoking is a bad habit, but I did have smoke hanging out of my mouth while riding, and when the ash fell off, it fell towards the windshield. I got the very first CalSci windshield for the CB500x they made, and would replace it with the same if anything ever happened to the one I have.

In my experience, most windscreens on "adventure" bikes from most manufacturers really, really suck. The problem is that a windscreen that is short like a sport bike screen is pretty useless for an upright rider. A screen that is tall enough to get the wind up over your head like the CalSci stuff or some of the solutions from Madstad, is not going to look good in a showroom (or anywhere else). BMW does a decent job, but at a price and for a very specific target market and in part by offering a variety of windscreens. There's a reason they went for a much shorter shield on the F700GS than on the F800GS. All their research showed that the purchaser of the former is going to be almost entirely on pavement, while the latter is going to do more "serious" adventure riding. For the street they went with the short shield because it's quieter! V-strom shields suck. Versys shields suck. 500X screens suck.

The problem is that they tend to direct the airflow at the precise worst point, which is right at the bottom of the helmet where it creates an awful low-frequency buffet that gives me a headache no matter what earplugs I use. Not a matter of sound level as much as the frequency/nature of the sound. Get a taller screen and it will drive the air higher. Get rid of the screen and you'll take more wind to the chest but your head will be in clean air. Use the stock screens and your experience will suck. Hold your hand across the front of your neck right below the chinbar and most of that noise goes away completely.

I find this is particularly a problem with the Shoeis. My old Icon Airframe is quieter behind a windscreen than my Quest because it seems to do better with wind coming at the neck roll. The "upright" Shoeis (GT Air, Quest) seem to be designed on the assumption that you'll be behind a large touring screen. The sport helmets (RF1100/1200, X12) are designed for a 3/4 to full-tuck position. None of them do well in my opinion on an upright bike with a mid sized screen and I find them somewhat lacking on naked bikes too. They are incredibly sensitive to head position. Move your chin up and down just a little bit and the noise level changes tremendously. Hold your hand out under the chin bar to block the wind and the problem goes away completely. (I won't even talk about the Neotec, which I thought was a disaster in terms of noise both from the neckroll and the chinbar joints.) I just switched to an Arai RX-Q. Best money I've spent. Can't wait for their new pro-shade option.

Go over to Stromtrooper.com (another Motorcycle.com site) and read their threads that have been going on for years about the problems with buffeting on all the V-stroms including the latest one that supposedly addressed the problem with a new windshield design (it didn't, despite years of feedback and home-made solutions). Do the same at Triumphrat for discussion of the same issue on the Tiger 800s. It's not uncommon with these bikes. The manufacturers all know what can be done to address the issue because it's been hashed out by motorcyclists all over the world since the first adventure bikes came out. The problem is that the solutions look dorky and manufacturers are not interested in putting out bikes whose look is offputting. As I said, the solution seems to be either taller screens or shorter screens. Noise on a motorcycle is ineveitable and the faster you go the louder it'll be, but that migrane-inducing low-frequency pounding is not inevitable and can be easily removed.

You guys are making me nervous. I haven't ridden my x yet and noise is a big concern for me. Guess when the rubber hits the road (hopefully next week) I'll be playing with windscreen height and angle. I'm hoping it won't be much of an issue for me at 5' 7". I did read on another site that the GIVI screen solved one guy's issue with noise with a woonderful write up. I'll see if I can find it again. Not sure if posting links to another site is allowed. Can anyone advise?

We are here to share information on motorcycling. I don't think posting information relevant to what we are discussing would break any rules. As you can see by this thread a number of links to other sites has already been provided.

If the problem has been addressed on other forums and a solution found, we would love to see it. The more information we can obtain, the better chance we have of buying the proper windscreen to suit our individual needs.
