Hey guys, I high sided my 500R at the track and it's pretty busted. I just wanted your opinions on what I should do with it. I don't know if it's worth making into a track bike since it's only a 500cc and I would need more power to go up to B group eventually anyway. And I don't know if it's worth the money to make it street rideable again. What are your thoughts?
EDIT: Not sure why the embedded images aren't showing. Added attachments.
you'll be surpassed how cheap oem parts are for this bike. Get yourself the parts catalogue for part numbers you'll need in order to get a quote from the dealer. At least suss out the cost before writing off the option. I had to replace the entire right side of mine, total parts which includes additional, more expensive than stock parts; was $2800aud. and that was insurance claim prices. If you shop wisely, some parts aftermarket (indicators, mirrors, pegs etc), other parts 2nd; and you do all the work yourself, it's highly likely going to be a reasonable to fix it.
Agreed. Most parts are pretty cheap on these.
Pull the fairings off. Get things buttoned up and straightened best you can (search for fork alignment on this forum; also check rear wheel alignment roughly using the chain adjuster marks), take it for a spin, and see how it rides (carefully).
This may not be a fast bike for the track, but it's a pretty decent one for learning how to corner well. You might save money by just getting some race fairings and not wasting money on signals and lights.
First off, I am so sorry to see what happened to you and your bike!
And I'm with the others above. This bike is less expensive than you think to just pull the plug. Heck, you can even get creative and go for a streetfighter look, if it turns out nothing is seriously bent that isn't easily replaceable like the forks. You can even buy one of those custom fairing kits off eBay like this Repsol kit. (You would just need to repaint the tank to match) Orange Red Black Injection Mold Fairing Plastic for Honda 2013 2014 CBR500R Aac | eBay
Or.... they have the red replacement set for yours: Red ABS Plastic Fairing Bodywork Set for Honda CBR500R CBR 500 R 2013 2014 3A | eBay
Hopefully it's all cosmetic and you can get her mended!
I'd check if the rame is still straight; I've seen accident bikes with less visible damage, they were written off by the insurance because of a "bad frame". Did the steering lock break?
Parts may be cheap but they add up... I'd ask a Honda dealer to give you an estimate, then decide what to do.
Yeah can see the console is twisted to the right in one of the pics, that sub-frame component is a bolt-on though, so all good.
Had a mate have his bike written off cause the rear sub-frame was bent, and that was a bolt on component too, some insurers are just a55es.
I bought a K75S which looked like it went down at relatively low speed. The headlight was broken, there were some scrapes on the plastics on one side but no dent in the alu tank, and the front rim showed that it must have hit something, but the glass in the mirrors wasn't even broken. It looked like a few hundred bucks would get it back on the road, but since I was buying bikes written off by the insurances I wondered where the "hidden damage" was. I actually rode the bike home and there was nothing wrong with it!
When I took it to the dealer I asked the mechanic who wasn't very forthcoming, said it had frame damage. I bothered him some more until he finally told me that the bike slid, hit a curb which dented the rim, and he impact to the forks broke the steering lock. One fork leg touched the frame and there was a tiny indentation visible, not bigger than a pellet from a BB gun. Frame damage, bike was a total write off.
At home I hammered the fork stop on the frame straight, replaced the broken parts and had a nice Beemer for very little money!
I like the idea of making it a street fighter -- :serious: You could just go for partial fairings which would keep the cost low as long as the rest of the bike is only about straightening out the headset and such...
